T Picks: What to Wear to the Beach

< Back to Articles By UOB Cards x T: The New York Times Style Magazine

In the face of unrefuted climate change, temperatures the world over are on a steady incline. While that’s no reason to celebrate, a sun-drenched seaside holiday still makes for an escapist getaway that’s tough for anyone baffled with current tempestuous times to turn down. As the summer season begins to blaze up, heading to the beach should be a luxury savoured with as much delight in as many ways possible, including sartorially.

Below, courtesy of Farfetch and UOB Cards, the warm-weather staples — from a revamped shirt dress to ocean-inspired jewels — to decorate your upcoming sun-sea-and-sand excursions.

Ready-to-Wear

For a great time under the sun without dissolving into a puddle of sweat, it’s common knowledge that lightweight garments are the way to go. That doesn’t equate to rationing on colours though. One way to go about it: punch up an oversized shirt dress by pairing it with zesty-hued swimsuits and bikinis underneath. It’s maximum breathability and non-style-compromising ease at one go.

Bags

Fashion sometimes goes to astounding, seemingly incomprehensible extremes. The mammoth straw sun hat of Jacquemus Spring 2018 La Bomba fame was one of those. Its phenomenal proportion embodied an infectious summer esprit that the Instagram population was giddily not immune to. This season, the French designer translates the gargantuan into a toteable rendition: Le Grand Baci straw bag. But if you’re content with space ample enough for the basic essentials, Staud’s structured faux croc leather bucket bag and Jil Sander’s minimalist tote are contenders.

Shoes

Summer is no excuse to backslide on footwear. Designers have been updating summer shoes with lighter and more comfort-prioritising materials which, at the same time, look beyond cabana-ready. Case in point: Prada’s proposal for daytime walks come served in a tongue-in-cheek plexiglass strap sandals. If time-tested classics are preferred, go for Castañer’s Yves Saint Laurent-approved espadrilles, of which woven straw wedge soles hold water in terms of non-style-compromising comfort. And when the sun sets, swap them for dainty low-heel mules apt for a rosé-fuelled dinner by the seaside.

Accessories

Covering up in the midday sun is vital, and what better way to do so than with a straw hat perfected to the T by Chanel’s very-own couture milliner? Instead of a run-of-the-mill cap, have this in rotation alongside a printed silk turban topped with an oversized pair of round-framed sunnies reminiscent of Old Celine.

Jewellery

There’s little surprise that designers constantly look towards the ocean for inspiration. The aquatic life carries within it a bountiful source of diverse elements. This season, channel underwater beauty with a seashell-bedecked choker and weave in coral hues with a mismatched pair of earrings or perhaps a pair that emulates its amorphous rocky form.
